A REC represents the environmental attributes of electricity generated from renewable resources. One REC represents the generation of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity from an eligible source of renewable energy. Every MWh of renewable energy delivered to the grid equals one less MWh of fossil fuel or other traditional energy source of energy generation. A REC can be used by residents and businesses to show a voluntary renewable energy purchase. It can also be used by utilities to meet regulatory compliance requirements for renewable energy policies. RECs are also known as “green tags” and “green certificates.”
